Plasterboard is a Versatile material widely used in interior construction, which has been replacing other more traditional ones due to its ease of installation and its properties of Acoustic and thermal. But what is plasterboard? At Decoora we share with you today a complete guide on types and uses in decoration and renovations.
Extremely versatile, plasterboard can be used in a variety of applications: partitions, ceilings, wall cladding and furniture. There are, however, Different types of plasterboard to suit different needs; moisture-resistant boards, fire-resistant boards or boards with other special properties. We talk about all of them and teach you how to distinguish them.
What is plasterboard?
The plasterboard manufacturing process begins with the extraction and grinding of gypsum, which mixed with water is placed between two layers of special cardboard. Subsequently, This set is pressed and dried, creating the laminated plasterboards. that we have all seen at some point.
The ability to adapt to different applications, from the construction of partitions to wall cladding or furniture manufacturing, makes this material one of the most versatile. But it also stands out for its easy handling and installation and for its acoustic and thermal insulation properties that contribute to the comfort of a home.
Types of plasterboard
Plasterboard offers various options to adapt to different needs and conditions as we have already mentioned. It does so, generally, by adding to the inner layer of plaster that modify aspects such as fire resistance, moisture resistance, acoustic insulation, strength and/or density.
Choosing the best plasterboard will depend on the specific needs of the project; local building regulations and the manufacturer's considerations. Below are some of the most important considerations: Types of plasterboard that you can differentiate at a glance by color. And in addition to the standard white or light grey plates, there are many others:
Standard Pladur Plate (Light Grey)
Plasterboard, identified as Type N, is a versatile and popular option. Made up of a 100% natural gypsum core closely bound to two sheets of cellulose, it is used as a pBase lacquer for dry construction of interior masonry units that do not require special features: partitions, continuous ceilings, cladding and other decorative elements.
It is characterized by having a thickness of 13, 15 or 18 millimeters and a light gray base with longitudinal edges covered with cardboard. Its light grey tone provides an ideal base for applying a decorative finish. and one of their faces is prepared for this. They can therefore be customized to suit the aesthetic preferences of each client.
Fireproof Plasterboard Plates (Pink)
Although there are standard non-combustible plasterboard panels, the F-type plasterboard panels, recognizable by their pink tone, are the most prominent for projects where high fire resistance is required. Formulated to provide an additional barrier in situations where fire safety is essential, it incorporates mineral fibres and/or other additives in the gypsum core to improve its cohesion at high temperatures.
Fiberglass mesh, a non-combustible and insulating material, and the high density gives it greater fire resistance. They are used in any interior that requires greater fire resistance and for fire protection of load-bearing structures.
Impact Plasterboard Plates (Yellow)
The yellow plasterboard plates stand out for presenting a higher density and surface hardness. Their reinforced formulation gives the surface great resistance to impacts as well as fire. This makes them suitable for projects that require additional structural resistance and high durability. In short, high-performance projects that, in addition to providing surface resistance to impact, also offer a high level of fire resistance.
Water-repellent plasterboard panels (green)
Green plates are designed to resist moistureThey have additives to reduce water absorption capacity and mold development and are therefore suitable for special applications in bathrooms. controlled humidity such as kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, changing rooms or basements.
Sound-absorbing or Acoustic Pladur Plates (Blue)
Blue plates, on the other hand, are used in applications where a high level of protection is required. greater surface hardness and greater insulation against airborne noise. They provide improved acoustic performance over previous models, making them a valuable choice for recording studios, movie theaters, or commercial spaces.
Now you are familiar with the types of plasterboard, we will continue exploring the possibilities of this material in future posts.
